“Living Skulls” – High School Art

Students enrolled in Art 2 first created charcoal sketches of skulls -with emphasis placed on creating a full range of value, paying attention to shadows, midtones, and highlights. They then had the option of using either a human skull or various animal skulls to draw from. They were asked to incorporate a number of “living” elements — such as flowers and insects. The flowers and preserved insects were available for the students to view while drawing. The finished pieces were completed using a combination of charcoal pencil, ebony pencil, and colored pencils on 18 x 24 inch grey paper.
