7th Grade “Worry Pots”

For this project students brainstormed ideas for the construction of unusual pots. While they were allowed to build more traditional vessels, they were also encouraged to think outside of the norm and build pots inspired by everyday objects as well as animals and food items. Some students created coil pots that were smoothed and others based their designs on things such as a video game controller, a turtle, a coffin, and a fish. Once the pots were constructed each student was asked to create tiny sculptures that represented what they worry about. The little sculptures are like symbolic tokens. Each token is to be placed inside of the “worry pot” with the idea that they can “forget their worries” by storing them away inside of the pot. The project was meant to foster self reflection and to encourage each student to think symbolically.
