During a three part project, third graders learned about insects and their various body parts such as the head, thorax, and abdomen. They also learned that insects have six legs and antennae, mandibles, and wings. For the first portion of the project students created a symmetrical “paint blot” on their papers and then added insect parts to create their very own fantasy bug. Once the two dimensional bugs were complete, they used clay to craft three dimensional bugs. Finally, they focused on a particular kind of bug and studied honey bees. After learning about the bees they created hives using hexagons which were painted in with bold colors.
