First graders learned about birds that do NOT fly south for the winter! They viewed images of birds like cardinals, blue jays, and goldfinches. They were then instructed on how to draw a bird using basic shapes such a circle for the head, an oval for the body, and a triangle shape for the “mohawk” of feathers on top. They were then encouraged to create their own birds. Students also viewed real wooden birdhouses and drew their own versions of those. They then painted a branch using tempera and added falling snow with white oil pastel. The birds and houses were added to the branch paintings to round out their beautiful winter snow bird scenes.
