Second graders viewed and discussed several paintings by artist Gustav Klimt. They took note of the many patterns that are shown in his work. Special attention was paid to the painting of the baby resting in a pile of blankets – each blanket covered with a different pattern. Students were asked to imagine themselves sleeping in a pile of quilts of many colors. They were asked to draw a pattern on each quilt – filling the entire page with embellishment. Finished drawings were traced with crayon and filled with watercolor — for a watercolor resist effect.
