The after school art group had the opportunity work in collaboration with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. As a part of this collaboration, they visited the Gee’s Bend quilt exhibit at the museum. After a lesson during which they viewed and discussed the quilts in the exhibit, they were inspired to create their own group quilt. First they sketched out their ideas for a square or rectangle that would be included in the quilt. They then cut their designs out of fabric and used fabric paint to add smaller details to their designs. The finished squares were pieced together to form a quilt. Students also wrote poems about their designs.
