Beautiful Banyan Trees

banyan1                 Sixth graders learned about banyan trees – the largest trees in the world due to their vast root systems. One of the largest banyans has a spread of three acres! Students drew banyans – making sure the branches and roots spread all the way to the edges of the paper. They then painted the trees with black tempera. Once dry, the negative space was filled in with bold and bright colors of oil pastel – as to create a dynamic contrast between the black lines of the banyan and the bright colors in the background. The results are vibrant and gorgeous.
